Vision Research:
In today's security-conscious world, better access
control-whether it's a company restricting entry into its building
or a government monitoring entry into a country-has become a
priority. Face recognition is an especially appealing technique,
because capturing an image of the face is simple and nonintrusive.
Speech recognition is a long-promised technology that's finally
beginning to deliver. However, facial recognition can also be used
to interpret sign language, or even read lips.

Active projects include:
1) single and multi-camera based stochastic methods for
tracking humans, human faces, arms and hands and subsequent
recognition of action with applications to American Sign Language
Recognition, security and surveillance,
2) deformable and stochastic model theory for segmentation and
shape estimation,
3) Graphical models for human action recognition and
4) Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics applications.
